Tannahill Tournament

The Golf Story Major Championships, their Background and History Being one of the oldest clubs in the whole of East Africa, it is fitting that the development of the game and the emergence of important national and regional competitions grew out of the activities of the Royal Nairobi Golf Club.

It is no surprise then that the Tannahill Shield, named after one of the most active and well known of the club's members is still regarded as the premier interclub competition in Kenya. The tournament was inaugurated in February 1924 as the 'Easter Tournament' for the obvious reason that it has been held, probably without exception over the long Easter holiday. In the early days of Kenya's history, Saturday morning was commonly part of the working week and many people, particularly those in Government service, took off Wednesday afternoons in lieu.

During Easter, even then, the whole weekend from Good Friday to Easter Monday would be declared a holiday that allowed participants from all over the then colony to congregate in Nairobi in time to play for the trophy of a silver shield, known since 1938, when it was presented by Mrs. Tannahill, as the Tannahill Shield in recognition of the contribution made to the club by her late husband, Arthur, a prominent member of the day.

Tannahill 2017

It is that time of the year again- when the best amateurs in the country congregate at the Royal Nairobi Golf Club to compete for the most prestigious team prize of them all- the Tannahill Shield.

On behalf of the entire board, I wish to welcome you all to the 92nd edition of this event scheduled to take place at the club from the 14th to the 16th of April 2017.  As a precursor to the main event, we shall have the Junior Tournament taking place two days before. This is the second time that this event is being held and this bodes well for the future of golf in the country given the type of experience that the junior players amass when competing at such level. It is my firm belief that this junior competition will continue to grow by leaps and bounds, just as the main event did when it was inaugurated in 1924.

To the teams and players competing, I wish them the very best of luck! Let them play the course as they find it and let them at all times exhibit the gentlemanly mien that is the hallmark of this game. As much as only one team can lift the shield on Sunday, the game will emerge as the ultimate victor if the teams and players competing in the event do so with integrity and decorum.

To the spectators and the public at large, myself included, please make the Royal Nairobi Golf Club the place to be during this Easter break where not only will you be privy to the best golf being played at the highest level but also get to sample the finest hospitality that the club can offer, headlined by the newly launched Upper Deck Bar.

See you then!
